Over half of young people experiencing homelessness report mental health issues, and nearly a third have formal diagnoses.*
That’s why we are proud to fund MAC-UK, a charity that supports and empowers young people. Their programme will support young people at risk of homelessness with their mental health using a flexible, holistic approach.
WHY THE PROJECT IS SO IMPORTANT
Growing mental health challenges among young people
Recent findings from Centrepoint* highlight the growing need for support around the wellbeing of those experiencing homelessness, with 70% of respondents reporting mental health issues. Younger people are particularly affected, with over half (54.1%) experiencing mental health challenges and almost a third (32.3%) being given a formal mental health diagnosis.
Unfortunately, there are often barriers in accessing mainstream support. That’s why MAC-UK’s programme to support the mental health of young people at risk of homelessness is so important.
How MAC-UK is supporting at-risk youth
St Martin-in-the-Fields Charity funds MAC-UK, which offers a holistic approach to mental health care. The programme aims to build trusting relationships and improve the mental wellbeing of young people experiencing homelessness. Activities include one-to-one support and group sessions where young people can actively participate and shape sessions around their needs.
Through their vital work, MAC-UK will help expand the research into barriers young people encounter in accessing mental health services. They will improve awareness of good practice in the wider community and build a stronger network for at-risk youth.
