• Project focus: Providing long-term accommodation through permanently owned property
  • Who it supports: Refugee and migrant families
  • Location: Northern Ireland

HAPANI, is a refugee-led charity established in 2011, supporting refugee and asylum seekers across Northern Ireland. In response to the significant barriers refugees experience in accessing safe and affordable accommodation, HAPANI established the Retreat Housing project in 2023.

With the support of our funding, HAPANI will purchase its first permanently owned property through its Retreat Housing project. The three-bedroom property will provide long-term accommodation for refugee and migrant families experiencing homelessness. By moving towards ownership, HAPANI will create a lasting community asset while strengthening its ability to provide stable, long-term housing for families who often face significant barriers in accessing safe and affordable accommodation.

The project has been developed from HAPANI’s frontline experience and is shaped by people with lived experience of displacement, homelessness and housing exclusion. An independent evaluation is already underway, and the project also offers valuable learning about refugee-led housing provision, tenancy sustainment and community integration.
